Why does our brain always stimulate negatively towards problems? Can we turn optimistic?

Hi again folks! I had been away for a week due to my exams but now I’m back on track. Moving on, let’s dive straight into today’s topic! So, at first, you may be scratching your heads so as to figure out how the hiccups and obstacles in our life can potentially be responded with a positive approach. Let’s hold our horses and try to understand that it’s not as mind-boggling as it seems. So, obstructions in our life, be it daily stumbling blocks or big adversities, are not easy-peasy to get through. They are, in fact, too overwhelming and stressful. But that’s the thing, you see, we always have a negative outlook towards a problem. We never try to relax ourselves for a bit and try to overview the situation rationally. It’s because whenever things get out of our hands, we can’t tolerate such mishaps and our upper part of the brain which is logic-driven and helps in analyzing and solving the problems, shuts down and the lower part of the brain which is instinctual and mainly deals with emotions, becomes super active and that is why we immediately get anxious whenever a challenge has to be faced. However, it absolutely doesn’t mean that you can’t do anything about it, you surely can.

Following are some of the techniques that I use to avoid overreacting and to let myself feel the emotions that prevail at the time of any hindrance:

  • The first thing that is of utmost importance is to get acquainted with your emotions that you feel whenever you confront a problem, ask yourself how are you exactly feeling: is it extreme agony or merely anxiousness portrayed externally in the form of sudden outburst.
  • Next step is to embrace your emotions and relax for a bit. Drink a glass of water and distance yourself from people for a while to settle down your overwhelmed feelings. [A word of caution: while disengaging yourself from the crowd, be careful that you don’t say something hurtful to anybody.] Though it’s difficult at first but gradually, with practice, you’ll get better at it.
  • Try to calm yourself down and assure yourself with the help of affirmations like “I got this” or “I’m strong enough to tackle this”.
  • Don’t just think of it as a hurdle. Think of the big picture. It’s just a speed breaker that has come your way. Just a little push forward would do. And that push would come with a whole lot of hard work, perseverance and firmness which will ultimately help you to grow. So, in the long run, it’s not a misfortunate thing to have happened after all. Just a reminder I’m still talking about facing problems not about overcoming the speed breakers; that was solely a metaphorical mention. Lol!

  1. After reading this I can say, ‘Go! Write a book.’ This is quite interesting coming from a 15-year old, that too, our 15-year old. I believe your writing is lucid and can capture the readers along with giving them positivity. I would love to wait for your upcoming posts. Also, thanks for penning this. Any positivity is welcome in the pandemic.
